Sundowns Is The Only Team Who ‘Loses Trophies’ – Mokwena

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena says they are the only club who loses trophies in South Africa while others win them.

After securing a 2-0 win over Maritzburg United that booked a place in the quarter-final of the competition, which has eluded Sundowns for two seasons, Mokwena was asked how winning it this season would change things.

Mokwena stated they are held to different standards as they are now considered the team that should be winning every piece of silverware on offer and if they don’t it’s considered by some as failure.

“That’s the problem, everything is expected, when you do good, it’s expected, we don’t congratulate and pat [backs], that’s the biggest problem but, okay, I don’t think it changes anything, to be honest between me and you,” Mokwena said.

“People will celebrate but will say ‘ah it’s Sundowns’, unfortunately, Sundowns is the only team that can lose trophies, the others win trophies, Sundowns loses trophies and that’s the truth but that’s the space we have to be in.

“It comes with the territory of being Mamelodi Sundowns and being a big team, you lose things, you don’t gain and win things.”

Sundowns await their fate in the quarter-final draw on Monday evening at the SuperSport Studios in Randburg at 18h00.
