‘We Need To Break The Eight-Year Drought At Chiefs’

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma admits that talk amongst the camp is to break their eight-year trophy drought in the Nedbank Cup this season.

Chiefs advanced from the last-32 after beating 10-man Maritzburg United 2-0 at the Harry Gwala Stadium last Friday with Christian Saile and Ashley de Preez finding the net.

They’ve now been drawn with Mostepe Foundation league leaders Casric FC, who are one of the unknown figures of the competition this year, having entered the professional ranks this season after the status acquisition of Free State Stars in the second-tier.

“They’ve been doing so well in their league, they’re number one, and I believe they didn’t get there on luck, they have been doing so well,” Bvuma admitted when asked by iDiski Times about Casric at the Nedbank Cup last-16 draw.

“I watched some of their games because we have some of our loanees there at Casric, so we’re looking forward to the game and we know very well it’s not going to be easy – there are no easy teams in this competition, the so-called lower division teams are the most difficult.

“Look what happened to SuperSport against Dondol Stars, you know? So we’re looking forward to the game and very much aware of what’s coming, we’ll just go out there and give our best.”

Bvuma confirmed they’re been some discussions amongst the team that being embarrassed by a lower-league team or any other team in their pursuit of silverware this season is not up for debate and they are aiming to shelve the pressure that comes with having to deliver for arguably one of the biggest support bases on the African continent.

“Yes [we have spoken about it], not only the lower league teams because it was a draw, maybe we could have been against any PSL team, we were just waiting for the draw and looking forward to whoever we were going to play,” Bvuma continued.

“We know as players that we need to break this trophy drought, it’s been eight years since we won a trophy, so we’re looking forward to this fixture, this game and performing, going all the way.

“Before signing for Chiefs we knew there’s a lot of pressure here, so we’re aware of it, we’re aware we’ve not won a trophy in eight years, so it doesn’t get to us, we have to try and just go out there and give our best, hopefully, we can break this drought.”

Amakhosi will turn their attention back to the DStv Premiership this week when they host Golden Arrows at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.
