Bafana Coach Signs New Deal Abroad

Morena Ramoreboli, who will lead South Africa in the COSAFA Cup, has signed a contract extension with Botswana champions Jwaneng Galaxy.

The news don’t come as a surprise after Ramoreboli guided Galaxy to the league title in 2022/2023 and leading Galaxy to the CAF Champions League group stages for the first time in 2021/22.

As the Galaxy claimed league title, Ramoreboli will be presented with another chance to take the club to the group stage but they will have to overcome the preliminary rounds.

He was recently appointed as coach to lead South Africa in the COSAFA Cup, with Hugo Broos only focussing on the Africa Cup of Nations and FIFA World Cup qualifiers, while assistant Helman Mkhalele doesn’t have the needed qualifications to sit on the bench.

The news had put question marks on Ramoreboli’s club future, but Galaxy confirmed on Tuesday that they have extended the deal of their head coach.

“Jwaneng Galaxy Football Club management is pleased to announce the contract extension of Mr Morena Ramorebodi for a period of one season,” the club said via a statement.

“Coach Morena has guided the Jwaneng Galaxy to the 2021/22 season CAF Champions League group stages and has successfully won the 2022/23 Botswana Premier League.

“The coach is currently with the Bafana Bafana national team as an interim coach for the COSAFA Cup 2023. We wish coach Morena all the best of luck in the coming season.”

Ramoreboli created a shock in SA football 10 years ago, crushing Pirates 4-1 with a blitz of attack in the 2013 Nedbank Cup in the round of 32 with Maluti FET College at Charles Mopeli Stadium, which earned him the nickname ‘Pirates slayer’.

Ramoreboli was also the coach of South Africa when they won the COSAFA Cup in 2021, leading a second-tier Bafana side to glory without conceding a goal in the Eastern Cape.
