Bafana Midfielder Earns Praise In England

Bafana Bafana midfielder Luke Le Roux has earned impressive praise after his return to the Portsmouth starting line-up in their recent outing against Norwich.

It’s not been plain sailing for Le Roux since his move to England from Värnamo in Sweden in July 2025, with his last league start coming in January this year against Bristol City and in the FA Cup against Arsenal.

The last 14 games that followed, he’s been on the bench 11 times, but a run of six games without a win and an injury to Ebou Adams opened up the door for a start for the 25-year-old which was taken with both hands.

“I thought Luke was excellent, that’s why we kept him on for the 90 minutes after bringing him back into the team,” head coach John Mousinho told The News.

“It was his first league game he’d started since Bristol City – and I was really pleased with his performance. He gave us a bit more defensive solidity.

“Losing Ebou, we thought Luke was an option for us, we’re a bit short in the middle of the park at the minute. He was very tidy, won his challenges well and played forward when he could.

“There have been games when we have taken Luke out of the side previously when he didn’t look quite as comfortable as he did on Friday. “Maybe in those games he gave the ball away a couple of times, but at Norwich I thought he looked sharp, he looked tidy, he did his defensive job really well.

“I would say it was unspectacular, but that’s what we want from Luke, we don’t need any foul-ups – and he did that very well on Friday.”

Le Roux will now be aiming to retain his place in the line-up when Pompey take on Oxford United tomorrow in a relegation six-pointer at Fratton Park.
