Benni Disappointed With Latest Kenya Showing

Kenya senior national team coach Benni McCarthy has expressed disappointment in his side’s performance in the first international friendly against Chad over the weekend saying that it’s not okay to dominate and not score.

The Harambee Stars played to a goalless draw with Chad in Marrakech, Morocco on Saturday where they had a better number of chances at goal. It was the former Bafana Bafana striker’s third match in charge, and he is yet to taste victory since arriving at the East Africans earlier this year.

Kenya have been able to score in their previous two matches, and the former Manchester United strikers’ coach believes they should have been a little patient, and they’d have been able to score against the central African side.

The former Cape Town City and AmaZulu coach also admitted that there’s still work to be done especially mentally in the side that is co-hosting the 2025 CHAN tournament.

“When you dominate a match like this you have to be very disappointed that you didn’t win, didn’t score goals,” McCarthy was quoted in Capital Sports.

“It was easy for us to play because they sat back very low and defended the middle of the park. We were just not patient enough. The biggest disappointment for me is that we didn’t score. I think the biggest learning curve for us is to be more clinical and more aggressive in front of goal.

“We need to play a little bit more with intensity because I think sometimes especially when they went one player down, a lot of our players still think we are playing in the Kenyan league. This is international level, so you have to maintain the intensity.”

Kenya meet Chad again in the second friendly at the same venues on Tuesday.
