Links Reveals Biggest Lesson He Learnt From Benni McCarthy

Former Cape Town City winger Gift Links revealed how Benni McCarthy elevated his game during his stint in the Mother City.

Links was in Egypt after leaving Platinum Stars, he played for Alassiouty SC which is now renamed Pyramids FC.

He stayed for six months before he was convinced by McCarthy to join City.

McCarthy was the head coach at the time for City. The 25-year-old joined the side and did very well and went on to win MTN8 in the 2018/19 season before leaving for Aarhus GF in Denmark.

Speaking with iDiski Times, Links opened up on how McCarthy helped him to improve his games even though at first he felt a bit of pressure as he was not playing regularly.

“And Benni, of course, when I returned from Egypt, he called me to come to Cape Town City, and, of course, I remember when I got to Cape Town City, I was complaining the first three months to my agent, ‘I’m not playing’, I got angry. And Benni, he just said to me, ‘Gifty, my boy, don’t rush, I will play you when the time is right. Trust me. I don’t want to throw you under the bus,” Links told iDiski Times.

“So just be patient’. And yeah, that’s how it happened. He improved my game, big time, Coach Benni is someone who helped me a lot. Whether I play friendly games or I play official games, I need to take everything seriously. Because I remember the month before I signed in Denmark, during pre-season, we were playing against Chippa in a friendly game. And then we were 5-0 up, I scored two goals in the first half, and then I went one-on-one with the goalkeeper, and then I tried to chip the goalkeeper, and then Benni got so angry at me. And then he took me out straight.

“And then he said, ‘Sit next to me’. And then I sat next to him. And then he says to me, ‘Do you know why I took you out?’ I was like, ‘No’. And he was like, ‘because when you get these kinds of opportunities, you need to score. I know it’s a friendly game, but you never know who’s on the stand watching the game. So this is a lesson for you to take everything seriously.”
