Aden McCarthy has reflected on scoring his first goal for Sabah FK after finding the net against German giants Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League.
The South African defender who joined the club in the off-season from Kaizer Chiefs, scored in Sabah’s 2-1 defeat to Dortmund, marking a memorable milestone in his career against one of Europe’s most established clubs.
Despite the disappointing result, McCarthy took encouragement from his goal, insisting the occasion showed that anything is possible in football, regardless of the opposition.
“It just shows anything is possible, no matter who you come against, the ball is round, anything is possible, so as long as you put yourself in those positions to score, it can happen,” McCarthy told ANews.
The 22-year-old admitted he had not anticipated scoring against Dortmund, explaining that the moment unfolded naturally rather than through any specific plan.
“I showed it tonight, I never expected to score, you don’t plan for these things, but it just happened in the moment, so I am very happy,” he added.
For McCarthy, the goal represents a significant personal moment as he continues his development abroad, with the opportunity to test himself against elite European opposition providing another valuable experience.
Although Sabah were unable to secure a positive result, McCarthy’s contribution against Dortmund offered a memorable highlight on a major European stage.
