Former Bafana Bafana captain Aaron Mokoena has given sound advice to Relebohile Mofokeng following his high-profile move to defending Belgian Cup champions Royale Union Saint-Gilloise.
Mofokeng recently concluded a four-year deal to the Jupiler Pro League outfit following an impressive clean sweep season with Orlando Pirates.
The 21-year-old was instrumental in Pirates’ treble success which includes a Betway Premiership title, Pirates’ first in 14 years.
The attacker also impressed with Bafana Bafana at their historic outing at the 2026 FIFA world Cup where the team qualified for the second round for the first time in history.
Meanwhile, ‘Mbazo’ who spent five years in the Belgian League in the early 2000s, spoke to iDiski Times senior writer Matshelane Mamabolo in edition 263 of the newspaper where he said being average is just not going to cut it for the South African youngster.
“The first thing he must understand is that he’s a foreigner,” Mokoena told iDiski Times.
“He’s going to have to be 10 times better than the local players. They accept foreign players who are exceptional. They accept foreign players who work hard.
“They accept foreign players who deliver. Average simply won’t do. It’s not enough just to be talented. You’ve got to show them every single week.”
The former defender added that Mofokeng can also win over the fans by letting his talent shine saying the sooner that happens the quicker Mofokeng will settle-in, in Belgium.
“He just needs to be himself,” added Mbazo.
“The talent he has, now is the time to let it out. He mustn’t hide. If he plays well, he’ll win the supporters. And once you’ve won the supporters, you settle much quicker. When you’re playing every week, and the supporters accept you, settling becomes much easier. If you aren’t playing, then every day feels longer.
“There are a lot of African people in Belgium. He won’t struggle to find people he relates to. When you’re a foreigner, you naturally connect with other foreign players. That helps you settle much quicker.”
Rele has already introduced himself to Belgian football as he provided an assist in his first pre-season game this past weekend after they staged a comeback from 3-1 down to earn a credible 3-3 draw against PSV Eindhoven.
