Swedish-based South African winger Tashreeq Matthews has reportedly turned down an offer to go play in the MLS.
Matthews, who had an excellent season in the Allsvenskan with Varbergs-BOIS, has attracted attention from across the football world, and according to a report from SportBladet, one of the very interested parties was MLS side Toronto FC.
According to the report, Toronto and Varbergs had actually agreed to a transfer deal of 1m Euros, and all that was needed was for the player to agree on personal terms.
However SportBladet say the 21-year-old withdrew from the deal.
It is believed Matthews would prefer to stay in Europe, and while his form has attracted a lot of attention, the Swedish media report that there is a clause that Matthew’s former club Borussia Dortmund will receive 500k Euro from any future deal, which has scared off Swedish suitors. However there is reported interest from other European countries.
Matthews, a former Ajax Cape Town youth player, made headlines three years ago when he was signed by the German giants.
