Van Wyk Points Out Differences In Austria Since Leaving Stellies

Former Stellenbosch FC winger Antonio Van Wyk has spoken about the biggest difference he has encountered since joining SV Ried in Austria.

Van Wyk joined Ried three months ago and has so far settled well in at the team who are fighting for promotion in the Bundesliga 2. Ried are currently second, three points off leaders Admira Wacker after 16 games, after winning their final game of 2024 last Friday.

There will now be a two-month winter break in Austria, where Van Wyk is working on a physical programme to deal with what he says is the biggest difference in Austria, the pressing and physicality.

“I would say running a lot, the pressing as well in this league, it’s much more physical than in the PSL,” Van Wyk told iDiski Times in last week’s e-paper.

“So, that’s why I’ve been gymming and getting a program for that.

“Because it’s tough here, in terms of shielding the ball when the opponent is like, twice as big as you and so I think that’s the only difference.

“And obviously, building up stamina to be able to run and press for all 90 minutes.”
