Sundowns Ladies Return To Winning Ways With Thumping Victory

Defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies got back to winning form, hammering Durban Ladies 5-1 away at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium, to open a three-point gap at the summit of the standings.

Week 16 of the HollywoodBets Super League produced an avalanche of goals, and the league leaders were ruthless as Nthabiseng Majiya bagged a brace, and is now joint-top goalscorer with nine goals, while the other goals came from Kholosa Biyana, Refilwe Tholakele and Andisiwe Mgcoyi. The ladies from Tshwane consolidated their number one spot with 38 points from 15 matches while Durban Ladies remained in 13th spot with 13 points from 14 matches.

University of Johannesburg (UJ), who have been hot on the heels of Sundowns, dropped two crucial points against TS Galaxy Queens following their 1-1 draw at the UJ Stadium. UJ scored first through Onelisa Nanasele in the first half but that strike was cancelled out by Nicole Michael in the second stanza. The Orange Army stayed in second place with 35 points in 15 encounters, while the Rockets remained in fourth position with 27 points from 14 outings.

Meanwhile, University of Western Cape (UWC) ran riot over Royal AM with a 6-2 scoreline in Bellville to stay in third place. Philisa Mjambane and Sibulele Holweni grabbed a brace each while Noxolo Cesane and Tiffany Kortjie also registered their names on the score sheet to help the Blues get to 32 points in 14 matches. Royal AM dropped to eighth place with 24 points from 15 games.

The match between City Lads and TUT Matsatsantsa Ladies at Isaac Wolfson Stadium had to be cancelled after the home side failed to provide EMS – an ambulance and medical equipment. This means that the hosts could suffer punishment of a walkover.

Other results:

  • University of Fort Hare 1-1 JVW
  • First Touch FC 1-0 Lindelani Ladies
  • University of Pretoria 5-1 Thunderbirds FC
  • Copperbelt Ladies 1-0 Richmond United Ladies
