Stellenbosch Football Club head coach Steve Barker has explained why the club opted not to sign Dutch defender Maxim Gullit, at least for now.
Gullit, 22, is the son of Netherlands legend Ruud Gullit, who won the Ballon D’Or in 1987. He has been in the country for a number of weeks, going through an assessment at Cape Winelands side, hoping to impress Barker.
But Barker explained the young Gullit was not signed by the Stellies because their foreign quota is already full but he didn’t write the signing totally off.
“I think he is a quality footballer, we enjoyed having him. Obviously the pedigree that he has and he really is good technical footballer,” Barker told the media
“It was a matter of having our foreign quota for this season full, in centre-back position we already have five this season, come the end of the season we will see what transpires in the market.
“There’s a possibilities that we could than we invite him in our pre-season, it’s not over it will depend on one or two actions that may or may not take place.”
Gullit came through AZ Alkmaar’s academy and made his first-team debut for the Dutch side in October 2020. In 2021, he joined Cambuur but left the club in July last year after making nine first-team appearances.
