Chiefs Given Lifeline In Velebayi Chase?

Cape Town Spurs CEO Alexi Efstathiou has maintained his previous statement that the “shop is closed” but equally admitted that if there was a knock, it would be opened.

A week ago, Efstathiou, told this publication that they were gearing up for the start of the Motsepe Foundation Championship and that on the transfer front, the “shop is closed” after they had rejected Kaizer Chiefs’ offer for exciting winger Asanele Velebayi as well as rumours of Ashley Cupido, who has since signed for Stellenbosch FC, and Chumane Butsaka who continues to be linked with various clubs.

Despite making that statement last week, on Tuesday, Spurs concluded a move for Cupido to join Stellies, and it seems as though Efstathiou has backtracked on his stance.

When quizzed by iDiski Times if the shop is now open following Cupido’s move, Efstathiou emphasised that, if there’s someone at the door knocking, someone will be there to open it.

“To answer your question regarding that the ‘shop is closed’, it is. We have to continue to operate as a club and focus on the challenge before us and that is to compete on the field not off it,” Efstathiou told iDiski Times.

“In the meantime, if someone knocks on the door, as Stellenbosch did, there will be someone to open.

“Last we looked outside, there was nobody standing there and knocking!”

It remains to be seen if Chiefs will once again revive their interest in the 21-year-old Bafana Bafana winger or cool their interest and look elsewhere.
