Chiefs Keen On Europe-Based SA International

South Africa international Thibang Phete has once again emerged as a potential target for Kaizer Chiefs heading into the new season.

Phete, 30, has spent the past 10 years abroad since leaving then-National First Division side Milano United after graduating from the Stars of Africa academy.

Most of his time has been spent in Portugal, while he has one season in the United Arab Emirates but it appears a return to South Africa could be on the cards after his side GD Chaves were relegated to the Portuguese second tier.

‘Cafu’ was linked with Amakhosi before his move to UAE in 2022 and it seems the new technical team around Nasreddine Nabi could reawaken that interest.

So far, Chiefs have signed Bongani Sam, who was spotted in Turkiye before picking up an injury, Fiacre Ntwari and Rushwin Dortley, but all of them are yet to be announced by the club, with the latter’s move confirmed by Cape Town Spurs.

Phete, who turned out for Vitória SC, FC Famalicão and B SAD in the Portuguese top-flight was a regular feature in Hugo Broos’ squad before his move to the UAE.

Last season, Phete made nine appearances, as his 2023/24 campaign was hindered by injuries. Overall, he has ran out for GD Tourizense, Guimarães B, Famalicão, B SAD, Al-Bataeh CSC and Chaves so far.
