Comitis Gives Latest Update On Mayo Interest

Cape Town City chairman John Comitis has confirmed that there are a lot of enquiries about Khanyisa Mayo, but nothing concrete has materialsed so far.

Mayo, 25, has been the pillar of City’s team in the past two seasons, finishing as the joint top goalscorer with Mamelodi Sundowns striker Peter Shalulile on 12 goals 2022/23, while this past campaign he netted on 10 times.

The former Richards Bay forward has previously been linked with moves to Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates but he remained with City.

Last season, Mayo signed a new five-year contract with the Citizens, which would keep him at the club until June 2028, but Comitis admitted there are regular enquiries about the player, with iDiski Times understanding City would allow Mayo to leave for the right price.

“There’s a lot of interest in Mayo and it happens every second and third day somebody is enquiring about him,” Comitis told Thabiso Mosia on Radio2000.

“The numbers got to be right firstly and [the move] probably right for his career also. But we can’t sell our old shoes until we have our new shoes so we have to be patient with Khanyisa.

“I think with those better players around him and more creative players I think we will see a different Khanyisa that will score goals. There’s nothing concrete at this stage.

“We have him in our plans and he is staying at the moment that’s our top striker. You got consider the players’ career.

“Younger players it’s difficult for in the Middle East, those kind of countries for younger players. When you are at the end of your career get an opportunity there then it’s a good deal and good money deal.

“But when you in your prime like is Khanyisa you better try get him to a decent European team even if it’s a smaller team.”
