Vasili Manousakis will re-unite with Benni McCarthy in Kenya after his exit from Cape Town Spurs was successfully negotiated.
Manousakis served in his last game as Ernst Middendorp’s assistant coach at Cape Town Spurs on Friday night, as Spurs came from behind to beat Highbury 2-1 in an important Motsepe Foundation Championship fixture.
‘Coach B’ will now be jetting off to join McCarthy and Moeneeb Josephs in Nairobi, however, he will not be with McCarthy at the reported official unveiling on Monday but is likely to join the team later in the week.
Spurs management were unhappy last week when the news came out that Manousakis could be joining McCarthy’s technical team, but an amicable exit has now been resolved, and Spurs confirmed his exit on Sunday.
With a strong candidate already identified, Spurs will likely appoint a new assistant for Middendorp in the coming days.
The MFC team, who were relegated from the Premiership last season, are currently fighting to escape the drop zone again, but Friday’s win, just their fourth of the league season, could give them a little breathing space and confidence. The victory saw them climb to 14th spot, two points ahead of Venda Football Club and three ahead of Leruma United, who are yet to play their round 20 game.
This will be the third time that McCarthy and Manousakis work together. Having first become McCarthy’s assistant at Cape Town City, Manousakis left City to join the former Bafana Bafana striker at AmaZulu, where Josephs was also part of the technical team.

After their exit from AmaZulu, and while McCarthy was at Manchester United, Manousakis spent a season at Richards Bay as head coach before joining Spurs last year after the club parted ways with Shaun Bartlett. He served as assistant coach to both Sean Connor and Middendorp.
There will be little time to rest for McCarthy and Kenya’s new technical team, as they are set to face Gambia and Gabon in World Cup qualifiers in a few weeks’ time.
