From US Back To SA? ‘I’m On The Market’

Former Real Monarchs attacking midfielder Tyrone Mondi is currently back in South Africa and pondering his next move, admitting he’d be open to a club in the PSL.

Mondi, 27, a skilful and fast player with an eye for goal, is yet to play in the South African top flight after moving to the United States at the age of 16.

He received a scholarship and finished a Bachelors as well as MBA degree in the States, while also continuing to grow as a footballer.

Mondi came originally through Kovsies before making the move abroad, where he has played for UNOH Racers, Detroit City, Chanticleers and Oregon State before moving to MLS Next Pro side Real Monarchs, who are an affiliate club of MLS side Real Salt Lake.

He finished as his side’s top goalscorer in his first season, scoring eight goals in 17 games in 2022. Last campaign was a bit more tricky, and his contract with Monarchs came to an end by the end of 2023.

As a consequence, Mondi, who can play on the wing, as a 10 or 8, is currently a free agent and would be keen to test the waters in the PSL.

“Currently, I’m working with my agent, there are a few teams we’re talking to,” the well-spoken Mondi told iDiski Times in an exclusive interview.

“I don’t know if I’ll be going back to the US or if I’ll be in the South African market – I think whichever one brings up the best environment where I can play, where I can go and challenge myself.

“I think the PSL has grown in leaps and bounds in terms of quality, players are going to Europe nowadays.

“It’s a market, if there was an offer from a team and if it’s the right team, it wouldn’t be a decision that I have to think for too long because the league has grown.

“I think there are tremendous [chances for] growth and opportunities to be the best that I can be in the sport.”

You can read the full exclusive interview with Mondi in next week’s iDiski Times newspaper.
