Moroka Swallows head coach Steve Komphela feels they need one or two new signings before the transfer window closes next week.
The Premier Soccer League deadline arrives this coming Friday, and there are a couple of deals in the works, as clubs look for their last-minute additions.
Currently in sixth place in the league, Swallows missed the chance to move into second place after their 1-0 defeat to Richards Bay on Friday evening.
“You can never say you are done, to be honest when I left the pitch, I had an interaction with the Richards Bay coach, who said ‘eh, but you guys have a good team’, yes we do have a good team with trust and confidence,” Komphela said at Dobsonville Stadium.
“We believe in this team but you never stop searching and looking [for players in the market], I think without sending a message to the team… if you say we need a centre-back or striker, players are going to read the comment.
“And whoever plays in that position starts thinking ‘am I not enough’, unfortunately, Keagan Allan is injured, had a fracture, and should be back in no time.
“But in terms of if we had possibilities to go crazy, where would it be? I think we need to be stronger on the left side of defence. Vusi is doing well, he is okay but we need another player who is doing well.”
Komphela admits they have good options in their defence at present but suggested competition for places could be vital for the 2023/24 campaign as they look to better their eighth-place finish last season.
“On the right we have Kwanda, Allan, Sipho [Sibiya] but we’re not desperate to say we need a centre-back desperately or a striker but we keep searching and as soon as the window closes, you still have an opportunity for those who are free,” he continued.
“There are lots of good players who can [be signed] on a free transfer, there’s also lots of recommendations made by people we’re sitting on – we’ll have to shift through and check, we can’t sign everybody.
“We just have to check which positions are crucial, we should [be active]… one or two [players], there’s one or two areas I think needs to be strengthened.”
Swallows travel to the Western Cape to face Stellenbosch on Tuesday, before returning home to host AmaZulu on Friday.
