Former Mamelodi Sundowns striker Cassius Mailula has explained that Rulani Mokwena played a major role in his switch to Wydad Athletic Club.
Mailula, 23, completed a blockbuster move to Major League Soccer side Toronto FC after his breakout season with Sundowns in 2022/23.
He netted 15 goals in 34 appearances under Mokwena, but couldn’t replicate this form in the United States, making only eight appearances for the club, scoring twice.
Earlier this year, he was “loaned” to Toronto’s Reserves to gain more game-time, with Mokwena and Wydad jumping on the situation and luring him to Morocco.
“I chose Wydad AC for several compelling reasons,” he said as per his agency P Management Sports.
“First, I will be under the guidance of Coach Rhulani, who knows me well and has always believed in my abilities. He played a pivotal role in my upcoming at Mamelodi Sundowns.
“Wydad is a prestigious club, and when Coach Rhulani shared his ambitions and his vision to make history with the team, I knew it was the right choice.
“Additionally, the opportunity to compete in the Club World Cup next year is a significant driver to the decision, as it aligns with my dream to play against the best players in the world.”
