Official: Mokwena Signs Former Downs Star

Toronto FC and Bafana Bafana forward Cassius Mailula has secured a loan move away from the Major League Soccer outfit to Wydad Athletic Club.

Mailula, 23, joined the MLS side surrounding much fanfare due to his exploits in his debut season with Sundowns where he scored 15 goals with four assists in 31 games.

However, his €1.5-million move to North America has not worked out has planned, playing a peripheral role within the first team.

Mailula featured only eight times since July 2023, scoring two goals and losing his place in the senior national team where he looked set to be part of the Africa Cup of Nations squad under head coach Hugo Broos.

However, he’s now secured a move to Wydad Athletic Club as he looks to get his career back on track for the 2024/25 season. He will now reunite with Rulani Mokwena under whom he burst onto the professional scene with at Sundowns before his lucrative move abroad.

“Toronto FC announced today that the club has sent forward Cassius Mailula on loan to Moroccan club Wydad Athletic Club of the Botola Pro (First Division) through July 31, 2025,” the MLS club confirmed.

“Wydad AC will have the option to exercise a permanent transfer for Mailula at the end of this loan.”

Mokwena has been seeking a new forward and left back in recent weeks as they get into the final stages of their pre-season for the Botola Pro campaign which starts next month.

South Africa are competing in the 2026 FIFA World Cup and 2025 AFCON qualifiers over the next few months and Mailula will be aiming to impress Broos.
