Bafana Bafana winger Thapelo Maseko has described his move to Danish giants FC Copenhagen a ‘dream come true’ as he embarks on a new chapter in his career.
The 22-year-old penned a four-year contract after a R28 million deal was struck with Mamelodi Sundowns paving way for Maseko to return to Europe after spending last season on loan at Cypriot topflight outfit AEL Limassol.
Maseko recently returned from the FIFA World Cup with South Africa where he performed extremely well for the country and played a massive role in sending Bafana to the knockout stages. He was named Man of the Match in the last group-stage match in a 1-0 win over South Korea.
His return to the national team came as no shock after he had a good six months in Cyprus with Limassol, playing 15 games, scoring two goals, and laying one assist.
Despite having a good World Cup, Sundowns made it clear that he is not in their plans and preferred to let him join a club of his choice.
Several clubs were interested in his signature, but 16-time Danish league champions FC Copenhagen won the race for him. He will wear jersey number 12. In his announcement, Maseko shared the moment of excitement.
“I am very proud of this agreement. It is a dream come true,” Maseko said.
“To me, F.C. Copenhagen are a very special club. They are a club that is highly recognised internationally, and [Sibusiso] Zuma has told me so many great things about the club, the fans, and the city. I am looking forward to experiencing it all myself.
“I am truly honored to get this opportunity, and it fills me with hunger and ambition. I have come here to make a difference and leave my mark on the club. I have big ambitions for the club and on a personal level.
“I come here to win, and I am very excited to get out on the pitch and give everything I’ve got.”
Copenhagen is currently in the playoffs of the UEFA Europa Conference League where they will face Finnish side Inter Turku. They are sitting second in the Danish Superliga with three games played after winning all three.
