CR Belouizdad striker Khanyisa Mayo has finally broken his silence on how close he really came to signing for Kaizer Chiefs.
Mayo, 26, completed a blockbuster move from Cape Town City to the Algerian giants ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

There will be a homecoming for Mayo, who netted 10 league goals for City last season and shared the Golden Boot with Peter Shalulile the previous campaign, as Belouizdad have been drawn in Orlando Pirates’ CAF Champions League group.
But Mayo was also very close to joining Pirates’ rivals Chiefs, the club his father Patrick Mayo famously played for, and now opened up on the situation.
“There was a good chance of that happening,” he said when asked by his former teammate Michael Morton on Soccerbeat.
“What occurred was, when I had just signed the contract with CRB, that’s when Chiefs came knocking and said they were willing to take out this amount of money for me.
“It was just one hour, we had just submitted the CRB documents.”
Mayo has since featured seven times for his new club, but Belouizdad had a tough start to 2024/25, winning just one of their seven league games, while drawing four matches 0-0.
