Bafana Bafana striker Lebo Mothiba has been linked with a return to France after a brief training stint at Wydad Athletic Club.
The 28-year-old was invited to Casablanca by Rulani Mokwena’s side, who are in search of a striker for the second half of the season.
However, much like Bongani Zungu, the lack of first-team football after injury-hit spells for the players, meant their lack of match fitness was the reasoning behind not signing.
Ligue 1 club Montpellier has now been mooted as potential suitors for the robust striker who has been a free agent since leaving RCS Strasbourg in July 2024.
Mothiba saw a move to Belgian Pro League Club Standard Liege fall through after failing to reach an agreement on contractual terms whilst he spent time training in Germany with Karlsruher.
He will now be aiming to secure a new club to get back into action, after recovering from the patellar tendon rupture that ended his 2023/24 season with Strasbourg.
Mothiba scored 20 goals with six assists in 96 games for the club after his €4-million (R78m) transfer from LOSC Lille in August 2018.
