New Twist For Mngqithi At Downs?

Mike Makaab, the agent of Manqoba Mngqithi, has stated that his client will likely “take over” the role of the Head Coach after Rulani Mokwena’s exit.

Mamelodi Sundowns confirmed Mokwena’s departure last week, but didn’t give any update on an incoming new head coach, while Steve Komphela returned as Senior Coach over the weekend.

Mngqithi previously worked as co-coach alongside Mokwena, but saw his role demoted to Senior Coach, when Mokwena was named sole Head Coach and Komphela moved into First Team Coach in October 2022.

However, with Komphela now returning as Senior Coach, Mngqithi appears to have moved into the head coach role – at least as caretaker – according to Makaab, who insisted the club will clarify everything in the coming weeks.

“Manqoba was the Senior Coach assisting Rulani Mokwena,” he said on GagasiFM‘s Extra-Time.

“At this stage, Manqoba will take over as the Head Coach, and again it will be clarified over the weeks and months to come, and Steve Komphela returns as the Senior Coach.

“It’s always been the case that they’ve worked incredibly well together, they have enormous respect for each other.

“I think it’s a very smart move by Mamelodi Sundowns to bring Steve back.”

Sundowns are yet to announce Mngqithi’s contract extension, which has been in the works for a few months, as Makaab had stated recently.
