‘Nwabali Is Not Chiefs Material’

Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Junior Khanye does not think Stanley Nwabali is Kaizer Chiefs material as speculation about the goalkeeper’s future at Chippa United persists.

Nwabali is expected to leave the Gqeberha-based outfit at the end of the season after three years which saw him break into the Nigeria senior national team and cement his place. The Super Eagles number one has previously been linked with interest abroad in Europe, while locally Chiefs were said to be interested.

The 28-year-old has nine clean sheets in 23 league games this season and conceded 20 of the 24 goals his side leaked in, three coming in the 3-0 loss to Mamelodi Sundowns at Loftus on Wednesday night where he didn’t look too great in at least one of the goals.

After the match, Khanye criticised the manner in which the goals were conceded in Pretoria and warned that Amakhosi do not need someone who doesn’t get the basics right.

“I think the fact that he is a Nigerian international as first choice goalkeeper can be blinding because Nigeria have a superior team that covers him sometimes,” said Khanye on iDiski TV.

“But this guy when I watch and observe him he gives away a lot of goals especially high balls. They don’t beat him at the bottom but at the advantage of his height.

“I mean sometimes he’ll get a ball and then spill it, he does high school mistakes. So to answer you if he’s suitable for Chiefs I know they can’t bring Khune back but can they get a talented goalkeeper who can also play with his feet. A good stopper with good reflexes, talented and play with his feet I’m talking about a star goalkeeper.

“They must go do their research and I don’t think I see anyone in the Betway Premiership now. So no, I don’t think he’s a good goalkeeper for Kaizer Chiefs because he didn’t only make a blunder in this game.

“I know the technical team might say something different and I think someone is selling this guy. I mean even if you look at the second goal he was supposed to handle that ball, he’s taller than everyone he can probably touch the crossbar without jumping.

“For me he can’t do basics. Chiefs with the crisis they have they can get a proper scout to look for a proper goalkeeper.”
