Former Orlando Pirates assistant coach Sergio Almenara has been unveiled as head coach Jacob Neestrup’s second in command at Danish giants FC Copenhagen.
Almenara was part of Jose Riveiro’s technical set-up at the Buccaneers in 2022 before he left his role to join FC Inter as Head of Scouting though his stay there was shortlived.

In March 2025, he took up the Technical Coach role in the Finnish national team, responsible for set pieces.
“Up to and after Jens Berthel Askou’s departure, we have worked purposefully to find the right profile for the coaching team. Therefore, we are happy to be able to attach Sergio to our coaching team with a special focus on standard situations. At the same time, it is a priority for us to complement our strong, existing staff with new international perspectives.
“As we also see a development in creating a more international environment, it is also an advantage that Sergio is Spanish, and thus can also communicate in Spanish.
“It fits well with our ambitions for a squad that is and will become more international in the future with a base and backbone in the Scandinavian players.
“It’s also about finding the right balance – combining with skilled coaches who have an in-depth knowledge of F.C. Copenhagen, with new input from outside that can develop us further,” the club’s Sports director Sune Smith-Nielsen said on Almenara’s appointment.
