Bafana Bafana defender Ime Okon has expressed his excitement about joining Bundesliga 2 side Hannover 96, while he was also highly praised by his new side’s CEO.
Okon, 21, was heavily linked with a move to Kaizer Chiefs after his contract with SuperSport United had expired.
However, the towering defender has now joined Hannover instead, penning a four-year deal with the German side.
“I’m very happy to be signing with Hannover 96,” he told his new club.
“I’m very excited about this challenge of being able to play in Germany. I’m really looking forward to the club, wanting to become a better player and mature as a person.
“I would describe myself as a fast, robust defender – I’ll try to bring these strengths to bear from now on and thus help the team.”
Meanwhile, Hannover CEO Marcus Mann has praised the qualities of Okon and revealed new head coach Christian Titz already wanted the Bafana defender in January.
“Ime is a player with exciting talent and very good physical attributes. Christian Titz and André Kilian have been observing his development for some time,” Mann stated.
“We then collected data on him during scouting and evaluated his athletic profile, which is exceptional.
“It’s quite clear that he will need time to adapt, but he’s extremely willing to learn, so we definitely see the potential in him to develop really well.
“Now we want him to settle in well in Hannover and into our team.”
