Stellies Win Race For Chiefs & City Target

Stellenbosch Football Club have won the race for Richards Bay forward Sanele Barns, beating Kaizer Chiefs and Cape Town City to his services.

Barns, 26, has been instrumental for Natal Richboys this season despite sitting in the relegation zone.

The former University Of Pretoria striker made 18 appearances for Bay, setting up five goals and scoring three himself.

His fine performances were noticed by number of clubs in the DStv Premiership, including Cape Town City, Kaizer Chiefs and Stellenbosch.

City tabled an offer in January, but it was considered too little and rejected by Richards Bay. Chiefs also showed interest in the player but couldn’t agree with Bay, as they wanted the player to join the club in January.

This publiction understands that Stellenbosch signed Barns on a three-year deal after SABC Sport first reported over “advanced talks”, beating Chiefs and City to the signing.

He is expected to join the Cape Winelands-side at the end of the current season after Stellies agreed to a transfer fee with Bay since Barns still had one year and five months left on his contract.
