Former Bafana Bafan striker Lars Veldwijk, who was a target of Mamelodi Sundowns recently, is set to complete a move to Spain on Deadline Day in Europe.
The 32-year-old is currently a free agent after leaving K-League side FC Suwon, where he was one of the most prolific strikers in South Korea.
However, he terminated his contract via mutual agreement after a run-in with authorities when found driving under the influence in September 2023.
Earlier in January Sundowns were looking to sign the towering striker, as reported by iDiski Times, but they opted out of the deal and instead completed moves for Tashreeq Matthews and Thembinkosi Lorch.
Veldwijk, meanwhile, is in Spain to complete a move to CD Castellon, who are leaders of their division in the third tier, as reported by Spanish journalist Paco Xixidro. The club is coached by Dutchman Dick Schreuder and has several players with Dutch roots.
Spain will be the sixth country for Veldwijk as a professional football player after he started his career in the Netherlands, where he played for FC Volendam, FC Utrecht, FC Dordrecht, Excelsior, PEC Zwolle, FC Groningen and Sparta.
He also played for Nottingham Forest in England, while he’s also had stints in Belgium with KV Kortrijk, in Norway with Aalesund before moving to South Korea, where he played for Jeonbuk Hyundai and Suwon.
Veldwijk, who has seven caps for Bafana Bafana and was part of Stuart Baxter’s squad for the 2019 AFCON, has scored 154 goals with 60 assists in 382 games at club level throughout his career.
