The 2021 Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals have been confirmed with some mouth-watering clashes set for the coming days.
Equatorial Guinea and Egypt were the last two sides to book their place in the last-eight of the competition on Wednesday with no goals scored in either game as they ousted Mali and Ivory Coast on penalties respectively.
While there were no goals in the four hours of those two games, there were 12 scored in the other six as the likes of Burkina Faso, Tunisia, Senegal, Gambia, Cameroon and North African giants Morocco advanced.
Possibly the two most notable results were the Carthage Eagles dumping out Nigeria 1-0 after the Super Eagles looked as clear favourites due to their group stage exploits – and The Gambia who remain unbeaten in their debut.
Equatorial Guinea’s shoot-out victory was not one many would have predicted either as they beat the Dark Horses for the tournament as booked their place in the last-eight for the second time in their history.
