Mdaka On Being Honoured At Limpopo Sports Awards

South African national men’s U20 coach Raymond Mdaka says not a lot of things comes close to being honoured at home.

Mdaka was one of the 10 recipients of the MEC’s Special recognition awards at the 2024 Limpopo Sports Awards ceremony held at Meropa Casino on Saturday evening.

The former Marumo Gallants coach enjoyed a successful year with Amajita where they secured qualification for the 2025 U20 Africa Cup of Nations which also serves as an U20 World Cup qualifier scheduled for 26 April-18 May in Ivory Coast.

Mdaka says the gong is motivational for him to continue working hard.

“You see the only thing that makes me happy is to be recognised in my home province,” Mdaka told iDiski Times.

“You go out and do well, but nothing beats when you come home, and I really appreciate that. You must always remain positive in life good things will come, more so because you come here, everybody sees you getting an award and tomorrow you are going to the AFCON.

“This is something that motivates you to dig deep and work very hard. I’ll always try to do that and I’m happy to represent my province and do well.”

Mdaka also adds that he and his team have been hard at work in preparation for the AFCON since securing qualification in Mozambique last year.

The coach says he is comforted to see more youngsters are being given a chance in the PSL, however still worried if he will receive all the players, he needs for the continental show piece.

“It’s comforting but the biggest challenge that we have, the U20s are about 70% in the PSL now and sometimes they would not want to give you those players,” added Mdaka.

“Remember when I went to Mozambique I was minus seven players, imagine. So much as I appreciate when they are doing well the other side, I’m like I might be getting myself in another trouble but it’s trouble to accept.

“I have got an analyst we are working together very well, and we check even on players overseas. I’m happy they are doing well, the Shandre’s [Campbell] super, scoring in each and every game.”
