Former PSL referee Victor Hlungwani has applauded Sikhumbuzo Gasa’s bravery after correctly making a penalty call in Kaizer Chiefs‘ 1-1 draw against Stellenbosch FC.

The ball appeared to have struck a Stellies player on the hand in the penalty area in the dying minutes of the match.

At first, Gasa pointed to the spot but then overturned his decision after consulting with the assistant referee on the far side.

Amakhosi players and supporters in the stadium were up in arms about the decision not to award them a spot kick.

Hlungwani has however since dissected the reason behind the penalty not given.

“Gasa here awarded a penalty against Stellenbosch. Was this a penalty or not? he said on Soccerzone.

“Gasa then changed and said corner kick. He went for a discussion [with the assistant referee] and when he came back [he awarded the corner].

“The hand is in a natural position. Did it [the ball] hit the hand, the answer is no!

“So, no penalty! It’s not there. Chiefs were not robbed.

“Correct decision by Gasa to give corner kick.”
