CAF Head of Media Relations and Operations, Lux September has confirmed to iDiski Times that the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations will not be cancelled.
It’s only 24 days until the African showpiece is scheduled to start in Cameroon, but reports in Europe emerged on Wednesday that the tournament could be cancelled.
According to French publication RMC, CAF were having discussions about cancelling the tournament due to the rapid spread of the Omnicron virus worldwide and questions over health measures in Cameroon.
However, September has told this publication the tournament scheduled for 9 January to 6 February will go ahead.
“I attend all the CAF meetings, if this (cancellation of AFCON) was discussed at some meetings, I’d understand, (but) it has never been discussed,” he told iDiski Times.
“AFCON will be in Cameroon, alpha and omega. That, only in January. There is no doubt it this. There is not even a discussion about this.
“It’s typical mindset because they’ve got their own agenda. They’ve got their own interest, I understand.”
September’s quotes come after CAF General Secretary Veron Mosengo-Omba joined the Local Organising Committee in Cameroon to continue preparations for the tournament.
“We’ve been here in Cameroon for a week and a half now. Why would we spend so much time in a country when we’re not going to host the tournament?
“We’ve been here for a week and a half now, the General Secretary Veron is here as well, he’s the second most senior person (in CAF). Why would he spend his time and be here, visiting a country we have no intention of hosting a tournament in?
“It makes no sense.”
