After his team’s 1-0 loss to Stellenbosch at the Danie Craven Stadium, Cape Town City coach Eric Tinkler said the match officials had a ‘horrendous’ game, and his side shouldn’t have lost.
Despite the defeat, City remain second on the DStv Premiership log, but whether they remain in that position will be determined by the outstanding fixtures of Royal AM and Orlando Pirates.
Tinkler felt that on the day his team were better than Stellies, and deserved more from the match.
“Ja, I thought we played very well today I thought we dominated in large periods of the game,” Tinkler said after the match.
“I thought we created the far better half chances, because I don’t think really Hugo had to make a save. Not that their keeper had to make much saves either.
“But I thought on the field of play, we had a lot of possession. We spent a lot of time obviously in their half, and we managed to contain them.
“They obviously did surprise us to degree coming with a back four today. But as the game progressed, they went again with a back three, but in both situations, we let ourselves down obviously on the set piece.”
The set piece Tinkler was referring to led to Granwald Scott’s late winning goal, and Tinkler was not happy about it, feeling the officiating on the day was not good, and especially at that moment.
“Again, I think the officiating was horrendous, because first there is no foul, there should never been a foul, second I think it was off side.
“And then third, right in the dying… there’s no way Mpho Makola’s off side.
“Unfortunately, these things can make a decision of your future, which is unacceptable.
“I’m very proud of my squad, I’m very proud of my players. They’ve worked exceptionally hard this season and they deserved a lot more on the final day.
“That’s the disappointment for me, is that certain things that have happened this season aren’t in our hands, and it’s not right.”
