Mamelodi Sundowns were the big winners at the PSL awards, as Peter Shalulile walked away with back-to-back PSL Footballer of the Season awards.
The Masandawana striker netted an incredible 30 goals in all competitions in 2021/22, becoming the first player to do since Collins Mbesuma’s 35-goal campaign in 2004/05 to reach the 30-goal mark.
In the PSL, Shalulile netted 23 times, plus two in the MTN8 Cup, two in the Nedbank Cup, including one in the final and another three in the CAF Champions League.
Shalulile beat off competition from his own teammates Andile Jali and Victor Letsoalo, who both had incredible runs in Downs’ treble-winning campaign.
He becomes the fourth Downs player to win the highest PSL award over the last campaigns after Percy Tau won the accolade in 2017/18, before Themba Zwane won it 2019/20 and he himself lifted it in 2019/20.
The voting in this category was was done by the Premier Division head coaches. Only one head coach per club was allowed to vote and coaches were not allowed to nominate or vote for their own teammate.
The PSL Footballer of the Season is based on performances in all domestic competitions, meaning the DStv Premiership, the MTN8 Cup and the Nedbank Cup.
