Pele Family Releases Statement

Pele’s family have released a statement confirming the sad passing of the Brazil icon.

Pele, 82, passed away on Thursday after losing his battle to cancer, as first reported by AP.

His family have since released a statement, confirming his passing.

Pele, widely regarded as the greatest player of all time, is the only player to have lifted three World Cups and scored over 1,000 goals during his glittering career. He’ll forever be remembered for the 1958 World Cup final against Sweden.

Pele, the youngest player in the tournament when he was 17 years old, flicked the ball over before riffling it at the bottom corner, becoming also the youngest player to score in the World Cup final. He scored his second and fifth, a diving header to all but seal the win.

As he also won another World Cup four years later, he bowed out in style, scoring the first goal against Italy in the 1970 in the final to clinch his third world title. That was Pele’s game for Brazil.
