Former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Mumuni Abubakar says his Casric FC side are capable of pulling a surprise against Kaizer Chiefs in the Nedbank Cup.
The Motsepe Foundation league leaders breezed through the last-32 with a 4-0 win over Mkhambathi to set up a high-profile tie against Amakhosi.
Abubakar found the net in what was his fourth goal of the season, as the former Ghana U20 captain continues his impressive campaign thus far.
Having arrived in South Africa at Sundowns as a teenager in 2012, the tenacious midfielder has become somewhat of a journeyman, representing Black Leopards, Vasco da Gama, Richards Bay, Free State Stars, Royal Eagles, and now Casric.
“I think… my immediate thought [of drawing Chiefs] I was motivated because it’s kind of a blessing to play against Chiefs. Because so far we’ve only had an opportunity to play one live game this season,” he said at the Nedbank Cup last-16 draw on Wednesday evening.
“So playing against Chiefs will give us the exposure to excel and to tell the whole nation who Casric is. We’ll give them a run for their money, that one we promise them.”
The 29-year-old says they are relishing the opportunity to play on a bigger stage in a game that will be televised against one of the most supported clubs in the country.
“We are very motivated to pull a surprise, if you track the records of the Nedbank Cup it’s full of surprises, so we wish and pray we also pull off a surprise,” he admitted before stating there’s no immediate perception of what lies in stall for them.
“I think our focus was on our league, we’re not playing in the same league with Chiefs, so we can’t sit and analyse Chiefs [for no reason].
“So I think this is the right time to go to the drawing board to analyse them for the last-16 clash.”
