Former Al Ahly player Hosny Adel Abdel Rahman believes Mamelodi Sundowns are a team that plays “good football” but are “not intimidating”.
The 2016 CAF Champions League winners have been phenomenal throughout the tournament so far and they remain the highest-scoring team since the qualifying round, scoring 21 goals including two against last season’s finalist Al Ahly SC in Cairo.
On the weekend, Downs collected a respectable 2-2 draw against the record champions and received wide laurels for their performance.
However, Rahman believes that, while Sundowns are great going forward, defensively they are not convincing.
“Sundowns are one of the best offensive African teams, but they are not so good defensively. It is a team that plays good football, but they are not intimidating,” Adel Abdel Rahman spoke to “etc” channel, according to KingFut.
Rahman also insisted that Al Ahly once again going through a tough spell at this time of the season because they’ve played too many games due to their participation in the FIFA Club World Cup.
“Al Ahly are going through a difficult period since returning from the FIFA Club World Cup. They had to go to Sudan to face Al-Hilal, before playing in Aswan, and finally confronting Mamelodi Sundowns. This definitely has its impact on the players,” he added.
“Al Ahly missed several opportunities against Sundowns, and the rhythm of the game had to be broken after the second goal by Hussein Al-Shahat, and it was a defining point in the outcome of the match. The South African team was motivated and attacked fiercely after the second goal.”
Al Ahly, who are still unbeaten in the Egyptian top flight, have only won one of their last six games in all competitions.
