Broos Responds To Rohr’s Sundowns Statement

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos says he’s not fussed about how many Mamelodi Sundowns players are in the team after Gernot Rohr’s recent claim.

The veteran German tactician said South Africa, who opened the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers with a 2-1 win over his Benin, held the advantage of having a block of six Sundowns players in their line-up.

According to Rohr, having a crop of players based in the same club, Sundowns, who come off the back of winning the African Football League and dominating the DStv Premiership, played a role in their defeat.

But Broos feels it’s not something he’s focused on but rather how many winners he has in his squad to get results.

“It’s not only that, I will not tell you it’s because of those players that we won the game today, we play with 11, even with 15 today because there were some changes,” Broos said when asked about Rohr’s statement.

“In the second half after the injuries, there were fewer players of Sundowns and we won the game, so don’t make a story of that with me, whether it’s a Sundowns player, Pirates player or a Chippa player or whatever.

“What is important to me, is that I have a team and a team to win, not because of them or others.”

South Africa take on Rwanda with the chance to move four points clear at the summit of Group C when they face off at Huye Stadium on Tuesday.
