Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has agreed that his results this season would perhaps be celebrated more if it were with Orlando Pirates or Kaizer Chiefs.
Mokwena has notably been showing signs of increasing pressure to deliver at Sundowns, with the coach stating before the mid-season break, albeit cryptically, that he may not be good enough and that he was starting to fall out of love with the game.
When they returned from the Africa Cup of Nations break, Mokwena stated he was still not in a healthy state of mind, but would continue to give his all to achieve the success and targets Masandawana want and deserve.
With the African Football League title secured, and Sundowns on course for another DStv Premiership title, and in the quarter-finals of the Nedbank Cup and CAF Champions League, the pressure remains high as ever to deliver.
“I’m under a lot of pressure, I have to win every game, I have to win. But that is the nature of the business, you know, you have to win,” Mokwena, who missed out on the MTN8 title and Carling Knockout, said when asked if he feels his achievements would be appreciated more at the Soweto giants.
“I agree with you, I think you’re correct to say if you were to give the current results to any one of the Soweto giants, I think there would be a little bit more appreciation, but okay it is what it is.
“You know when you’re at a big club like Mamelodi Sundowns, winning is not enough but you have to win, win and continue to win – that’s my life, it’s something I’ve accepted, that was the life of my predecessors and will be my life for the foreseeable future.”
Sundowns were drawn in the Last-8 with AmaTuks, while they face Young Africans in the CAF Champions League.
