Bafana Bafana legend Benni McCarthy has agreed terms in principle to become the new head coach of the Kenya national team.
Having left his role as a first-team coach at Manchester United, McCarthy has been linked with several new jobs to return to his desired roles as a head coach.
During his time with the Red Devils, he worked as a strikers’ coach primarily during the tenure of Erik ten Hag.
Links with a return to the Premier Soccer League (PSL) where he enjoyed stints with Cape Town City and AmaZulu were rife, while talks of a potential switch to Major League Soccer was also being touted.
But he’s now agreed to take over the Harambee Stars in a major rebuilding job for the country who failed to qualify for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, and sit fourth in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying group with five points in four games.
They are, however, co-hosts with Tanzania and Uganda for this years African Nations Championship (CHAN) and the 2027 AFCON, which has likely played a major role in swaying McCarthy to take the role of succeeding Engin Fırat.
iDiski Times has been informed McCarthy will be arriving in Kenya on Wednesday to potentially finalise the move, with a special unveiling being prepared by the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) on Friday.
He’s likely to be in charge of their upcoming qualifiers against The Gambia and Gabon on 17 and 24 March respectively.
