Munetsi On Comparison Of African & European Football

Zimbabwe national team captain Marshall Munetsi reckons that African football is much more difficult than European football.

Munetsi made his name on African soil when he played for Blue Rangers in Zimbabwe before joining FC Cape Town and went on to play for one of the big teams in South Africa, Orlando Pirates.

The 28-year-old never looked back as he joined French Ligue 1 side Stade Reims and made a name for himself by playing over 150 games and scoring 21 goals.

The Warriors captain completed a big money move in January to English Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers and has so far made seven appearances in all competitions with a goal to his name.

After the 1-1 draw against Nigeria in Uyo on Tuesday, Munetsi credited his playing days in the French league and Mzansi as key to his football development.

“I think I’ve only been there for a month, so I can’t really say it helped me but spending my time in France and South Africa playing against some of the big names in football and also sharing the pitch with some good leaders, I think it’s something you take as you go on,” he told the media.

“The experience comes from learning from others that you compete with, that you share the dressing room with.

“I think in general, African football is much more difficult than European football. They always say it’s much more difficult to win an away game in Africa than in Europe, so that’s why all of you guys are always counting us out. There’s weather, there’s some funny tricks that do happen in African football.

“I think you get experience from playing and seeing what other people are achieving.”
