After Mbekezeli Mbokazi’s transfer from Orlando Pirates to Chicago Fire was announced on Tuesday, many fans were left wondering whether the defender can play in the Carling Knockout Cup final.
And the answer is simple – yes. Mbokazi, 20, was snapped up by the Major Soccer League side in a deal reported to be worth $3 million (R50 million).
He will join the club ahead of the start of the coming MLS season, which is scheduled to run from 21 February. However, with his transfer announced already, many fans were left asking ‘but can he play in the Carling final’?
Pirates confirmed in their announcement of Mbokazi’s transfer that the young captain will remain at Mayfair “until the final official fixture of 2025”.
“The 20-year-old completed a successful medical and finalised personal terms with the Men in Red during his recent trip to the United States, paving the way for a move of a lifetime for the Bafana Bafana international,” Pirates stated.
“Following positive discussions between the management of both Clubs, it has been agreed that Mbokazi will remain with Orlando Pirates until the final official fixture of 2025.”
The Buccaneers face Marumo Gallants in the CKO final on Saturday at Peter Mokaba Stadium at 18:00. The winners of the tournament will then face the Carling All Star XI in the Carling Black Label Cup, but it remains to be seen whether that game is regarded as an “official fixture” – should Pirates win on Saturday.
