McCarthy On Significance Of First Chiefs Goal

Kaizer Chiefs defender Aden McCarthy has reflected on creating club history after scoring his first senior goal in the gold and black.

McCarthy, 22, netted the only goal as Amakhosi claimed a narrow 1-0 win over Golden Arrows in the Betway Premiership at FNB Stadium last week.

The Chiefs academy product knew little that he had just made history by becoming the second member of his family to score in a league game for the Naturena outfit.

This means that Aden and his father, Fabian McCarthy, became the first father and son duo to score for Amakhosi against Arrows. The senior McCarthy netted for Chiefs in a 3-1 away win over Abafana Bes’thende at Kings Park on 14 September 2005.

“It’s quite interesting. I was two years old when my dad scored against Arrows in 2005, and knowing that I emulated him makes it historic,” he told the club’s website.

“I was not aware that he had done that and I was not expecting that I would do the same.

“It is amazing that my first goal happened against a team that my father also scored against, as it was my first goal for the Club and will be one for the history books, one to remember.

“It is also ironic that before the game, my dad sent a message and said I should get on the scoresheet.”
