South Africa’s U15 side lost a seven-goal thriller against Ivory Coast at the FIFA U15 World Cup & Festival in Baku on Thursday afternoon.

It has been a tournament of ups and downs for Selekedi Mogale’s boys, who had finished the group stages in second place behind Estonia to continue in Tier B of the tournament.

During the group stages they celebrated thrashings over Anguilla (13-1) and Maldives (8-0) as well as a 3-2 win over France, but also lost 2-1 to Kosovo and drew 0-0 with Estonia.

In the Last 16 of Tier B, they then beat Malaysia 6-2 but they then lost to Portugal 2-1 on Wednesday thanks to a last-minute free-kick by the Europeans.

On Thursday, they started with a rousing 5-1 over United Arab Emirates, but were beaten 4-3 by the Young Elephants. Reatlegile Mosimane, the son of Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane, Camden Schaper and Bohlale Finger were on the scoresheet in the defeat.

On Friday, they will now play their final match at the tournament against the loser between Uzbekistan and Niger for 43rd place overall.
