Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has urged other Premier Soccer League teams to challenge Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates more to elevate the standard of the league.
In the past eight years, the PSL has been dominated by Sundowns winning the title eight times in a row which, with the Tshwane giants also regularly having a higher number of players in the Bafana Bafana squad as well.
Broos has encouraged more teams to push Sundowns so that the league standard can improve, with Pirates going toe to toe with Masandawana for the league title this season – but Broos is calling for more teams to do the same.
“It’s not difficult. They are all there. So we have 23 players, and there is still a list of 20 players we can follow over the next few months and beyond. I think the only thing is that it should be good for the national team, also the PSL level should be higher,” Broos told the media.
“You have big teams like Sundowns and Pirates, and now there’s a good battle. It’s good for the players of both teams that I really have to battle for and struggle for to be champions.
“That makes the level higher, but the rest must follow. It would be good if we had four or five teams competing for the title here in this competition because they would push each other to higher levels. And it should have a direct influence on the national team.
“So let’s hope that in the future, the other teams will show a little more. I’ve said motivation is key because sometimes I feel that when they play against Sundowns or Pirates, they know before they start the game that they’ve lost, and that’s not good.
“It would be better if they had to struggle more to be champions, and not just against Pirates, but against three or four other teams, which would automatically push the level higher. Let’s hope that can happen in the next year.”
