Kaizer Chiefs made it five wins in a row in the Betway Premiership after beating Magesi FC 4-1 at a rainy Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday.
Silva and Duba scored in the first half, while Shabalala and Mayo added to the scoreline in the second to ensure that Amakhosi remained in third place on the standings with 45 points in 23 outings, while Dikwena tṧa meetse remained at the foot of the table with 17 points in 24 matches.
The visitors could have scored as early as the opening minute through Shabalala but he missed the target shooting wide. The hosts wasted a good goal scoring opportunity before their opponents scored through Tshepo Mashigo in the 22nd minute, while Thabang Sibanyoni squandered two chances soon after.
First, his shot at Brandon Petersen’s goal took a deflection for a corner. Kgomotso Mosadi took responsibility and swung the ball into the box only for Sibanyoni to head over the bar.
Chiefs broke the deadlock two minutes after the half-hour mark through the Guinea-Bissau born forward. Silva missed a chance to complete brace three minutes later after Shabalala had set him up. However, in the 37th minute they won a corner. Lebohang Maboe took it and the ball found Duba who made no mistake to double his side’s lead.
Magesi missed a chance to pull one back six minutes to the break with Sibanyoni again the culprit, leaving Chiefs with a comfortable lead at halftime.
Both sides made a single change at the start of the second half for Chiefs Khanyisa Mayo came on for Silva and for Magesi Mcedi Vandala replaced Khonadzeo Muvhango.
Chiefs’ chance at goal in the second half came just before the hour mark after Shabalala found Thabiso Monyane but he latter’s effort went wide. It was Shabalala who eventually netted the third in the 62nd minute with Reeve Frosler providing an assist from the bench.
Magesi pulled one back through a powerful header by Diteboho Mofokeng but the goal was merely consolation on the night, as Mayo put the icing on the top for Amakhosi. The Chiefs striker scored his first goal since September with a powerful header after an inch-perfect cross by Frosler.
The win saw Chiefs go six points clear of fourth-placed AmaZulu, with one more game in hand. They now sit 10 points behind Soweto rivals Orlando Pirates and 11 behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.
Chiefs are next in action against Polokwane City at the old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sartuday.
