Chippa United coach Vusumuzi Vilakazi has addressed his growing reputation as a specialist in steering teams away from relegation trouble.
Vilakazi, also known as Kanu, previously guided Richards Bay to safety via the PSL promotion/relegation playoffs after they finished second from bottom in the 2023/24 season.

He now faces a similar challenge with the Chilli Boys, who sit 13th on the table with 24 points from 26 matches.
Despite their position, Vilakazi remains confident his side will avoid the drop, citing the squad’s potential. He added that he hopes to one day lead a team competing for league titles and trophies, rather than constantly battling relegation.
“I don’t know whether I would say it’s an unfortunate situation where most of the time I have to try and rescue all my teams,” said Vilakazi.
“It happens at Richards Bay, It’s happening now at Chippa, but I just foresee myself as someone who is not afraid of taking on my challenges maybe one day I will take a challenge of coaching a team that is always competing for a league maybe that will happen obviously the man above knows how much I’m ambitious.
“But for now I take each and every project that comes to me and accept the challenge that is there. So, I said it when I was here and Chippa was the last on the log, I said Chippa will never be relegated and I still maintain that even now as I’ve lost five but I’m saying Chippa will not be relegated.
“I believe it won’t happen and with the capacity and also the potential that these boys have. It’s just that I still need to make sure I go back again psychologically in trying to make them believe in themselves and trust the process again.
“I thought I was done with that part, but surely it shows that maybe the complacency is taking place and then we need to be down on the ground again and then have that hunger of making sure that we survive.
“So, personally I know that we will definitely survive but I pray and hope that one day I will work in a situation where I don’t save a team but maybe I’m challenging to get something.”
