Former Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane says Africa needs to scrap the away-goal rule in CAF inter-club competitions to make the game more competitive.
In the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup the rule is used to break ties in two-legged knockout matches, but other confederations like UEFA have scrapped the rule out since 2021.

Mosimane who has won the Champions League with Sundowns and twice with Al Ahly knows the effects of the rule on the quality of the game.
He spoke to iDiski Times senior journalist Matshelane Mamabolo in edition 255 of the newspaper, where he said the move would enhance the game because teams tend to sit back after the result in the first leg.
“I was watching PSG in the semi-finals of the European Champions League,” said Mosimane to iDiski Times.
“The biggest thing that has ever happened, which is good for football, is what Europe has done – getting rid of the away-goal rule. Now you have 5-4, 4-3, 3-2 scores because no one sits back.
“The one thing I would say is that we [Africa] need to get rid of that [away-goal rule], then we can have open games. So, if it’s 2-2 in the first leg at my home, I’m still in [with a chance] because they still have to play for a goal.
“You know what I’m saying? So, I think the away-goal rule is what really creates challenges for us.”
Mosimane also said he feels the Brazilians should secure their second star this season because they are not facing a usual top contender.
‘The Big Teams Are Out’
“Listen, Bra Jakes, there’s no chance they [Sundowns] can’t win it,” he added.
“Al Ahly is out, Pyramids is out. Wydad is not there. Esperance is not there. Come on. Hey, even Raja is not there.”
