Former Pirates Coach Passes On

Orlando Pirates have announced the sad passing of their former coach Roy Barreto, the club announced on Wednesday morning.

Barreto passed away at the age of 72 in Portugal on Monday evening, 29 June, after reportedly battling illness.

The Buccaneers released a short statement to pay tribute to their former mentor.

“@orlandopirates is saddened by the passing of our former Coach, Roy Barreto. His contribution to the history and success of the club will forever be remembered.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the entire football fraternity during this difficult time. May his soul rest in peace. “🕊️

Barreto was at the helm of Pirates when he led them to championship success in the 2002/03 season.

The late coach was born in Malawi but also lived in Zimbabwe where his interest in coaching begun. He was also part of the Zimbabwe national team serving under the late Reinhard Fabisch in 1994.

Baretto also worked in Namibia before moving to South Africa where he first coached Free State Star before joining the Buccaneers who he led the latter to the title podium.
